Unpacking the role of a clinical psychologist.

A clinical psychologist is a highly trained and qualified mental health professional who specialises in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of psychological and emotional issues. These professionals work with individuals, couples, families, and groups to help them understand and manage their mental health challenges.

Clinical psychologists in New Zealand are registered with the New Zealand Psychologists Board. They undergo rigorous training and supervised clinical experience to develop expertise in various therapeutic approaches, including cognitive-behavioural therapy, psychotherapy, and other evidence-based treatments.

Their primary goal is to promote psychological well-being and improve the mental health of their clients. They assess and diagnose mental health conditions, develop personalised treatment plans, and provide therapy and counselling to address issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction, and relationship difficulties.

In addition to providing direct clinical services, clinical psychologists may also engage in research, consultation, and advocacy to enhance the overall mental health and well-being of individuals and communities. They often collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as psychiatrists, social workers, and counsellors, to provide comprehensive care to their clients.
